Holocaust violins revived

MAXIM REIDER , THE JERUSALEM POST Feb. 11, 2008

Violins of Hope, a special concert of the Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra and about ten soloists, is scheduled for the end of September 2008. The gala concert is part of Israel’s 60th anniversary celebrations and will feature violinist Shlomo Mintz among other soloists. The orchestra will perform on violins that survived the Holocaust and were found in concentration and labor camps at the end of the WWII. Israeli violin maker Amnon Weinstein spearheaded the effort to collect the instruments throughout Europe.

Thousands of guests are expected to arrive from abroad, including several actors, directors and politicians. The project is a gift to the State of Israel from European and American branches of the Meir Panim charitable organization. Violins of Hope is produced by Beni Boreh, who in the past produced Israel’s 40th anniversary concert at Masada.
