The pioneering project cast of musicians and singers is comprised of young Palestinians
Fundación Barenboim has premiered in the capital Palestinian Territory “The sultana of Cadiz,” a piece inspired by the music teacher Arriaga, the Spanish Mozart

The magic and mystery come together in an old Arabic folk tale tells the story of a poor fisherman’s son who was devoted to laze in the school caused the anger of their teachers. However, its beauty and sweet voice were the best assets to capture the heart of a young princess. The playwright Paula Fünfeck has rescued from oblivion this simple story in the booklet The sultana of Cadiz, a musical pioneer in the Palestinian territories, which bears the stamp of the Barenboim-Said Foundation.

This is an opera in two acts with music compositions inspired by Spanish master Juan Arriaga Chrysostom (1806-1826) created the foundation for former teachers and who has the baton of the orchestra director Anna-Sophie Brüning. The cast is made up of young musicians and singers exclusively Palestinians involved in the projects of instrumental and choral training taught by European teachers of the foundation that runs Daniel Barenboim in Ramallah. Among these new promises of the lyrical highlights alone and Marwan Shamiyeh Enas Massalha, Palestinian musicians who study and work in Europe and to develop their career linked to the projects that the director Franco-Argentine-Israeli split between the West and the Middle East.

In this opera, which premiered last Tuesday at the Cultural Palace in the capital and whose third and last is scheduled for tonight, also includes two young Spanish musicians, Pablo Martos, Rafael Molina, alumni of the Academy of Orchestral Studies based in Seville.
In a country where access to culture is a daunting task, the creation of an opera of this nature is a humble but precious hope for all who believe in music as the best way of understanding between cultures.

Several have been the institutions that have supported this project, including the Spanish Agency for International Development and the Foundation Vizcaino Aguirre, who has yielded to the Barenboim-Said Foundation documentation master Arriaga, a composer of the nineteenth century who Bilbao , despite having died few days before reaching 20 years, is known as the Spanish Mozart for his proverbial talent.
The premature death from tuberculosis deprived him of continuing to compose works of the reach of his opera The slaves are happy, which created the 14 years, age of many of the Palestinians who participated in The sultana of Cadiz.

DEAR PALESTINIAN CULTURAL GROUPS,
DEAR MUBARAK’S EGYPTIAN GOVERNMENT,

Please look. This German Version of DORIT BEINISCH’S JERUSALEM FESTIVAL 2009 and Members of Bashkirova-Gang have been supported by Israel’s Bibermann Government, more precisely speaking… Dorit Beinisch’s Ehud Barak. I promise. If Ehud Barak is innocent victim, he will make a public interview and I will officially honor Israeli Defense Minister, who has been the most difficult job… next to PM Bibi’s Financial Minister.

Please look. This is how your Half-Egyptian Contrabass Player used to work for DORIT BEINISCH’S ISRAEL. This guy doesn’t plan to live in Egypt and therefore cares nothing.

This is what the Palestinians say, “The joint Israeli-Arab orchestra does not truly seek to struggle against the occupation and various forms of oppression of the Palestinian nation. It seeks to overcome the hostility via music and dialogue, ‘without even mentioning the occupation and racism against the Palestinian nation.’”

See… This is exactly why I wanted to start VOODOO-DOLL PROJECT FOR THE PALESTINIAN KIDS. Then, after the Operation Cast Lead, I said that this is even not enough for them and THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GAS CHAMBER for those VOODOO-DOLLS will have to be built right in the center of GAZA.

🙂 Dorit Beinisch had a story with KACH members! So, this female jurist used Barenboim as a human shield to protect her family!! SIC!!! (This collection is not finished yet)

Her entire family members will find real happiness while living as Voodoo-dolls for the Palestinian Kids. Those dolls will have to look the most attractive, just as she used to look in front of her mentor, Ahron Barak.

(Updated on MAY 9, 2009)
DEAR MR. AMJAD MUSTAFA and EGYPTIAN CULTURAL FOLKS,
JIWON: (…) As I wrote in Barenboim in Al-Wafd Newspaper (MAY 6)… See, Barenboim is still trying to explain what exactly happened during the Wagner Scandal in Israel Festival. This is still NOT everything, though.
Netanyahu voids budget cuts against Holocaust survivors, elderly May 6, 2009
JIWON: This is still NOT everything, though. Anyway… is there something wrong with Barenboim’s opinion about this Palestinian musician, who used to introduce himself as a Palestinian Professional Fiddler? Until this moment, I tried to avoid insulting this Palestinian pig and never wrote his name in an open place. While wishing Good Luck in his independent future in this open place, I kept sending my warning through the back door, and then he just ignored it. He even used a small boy to hook Barenboim’s attention. But… have you ever seen a suicide bomber, who reveals his secret until the last moment of his life? There is a major or common characteristic of being suicide bombers and this Palestinian is not the one. This is why suicide bomber’ family is left as a main victim after his patriotic death while Hamas’ VIP family enjoys all the benefits from the society… without killing any one in his TRIBE. (This is getting a serious problem in Israeli Arab society, by the way. Then, Palestinian Y in Barenboim’s interview is NOT Palestinian, but Israeli Arab. Though he used to change his nationality whenever he is in need in order to take care of his professional career more successfully outside Israel/Palestine, there is a HUGE difference between the TWO. When those international media/pigs will realize IT?)
This internationally top-rate maestro gave this below-Palestinian-standard fiddler everything he could offer. Then Arson-Scandal is what he received in return. But then, do you think this is the only thing Barenboim will experience in REAL Palestinian area? I promise. Concerning this Palestinian Big-Mouth and all his previous behaviors, everybody around this Anonymous-Arsonist knows Barenboim’s Face and Name, and Palestinian territory is where you can easily find guns in public streets. Now, not only Israel or Egypt, but also Palestine is where I have to worry over Barenboim’s safety and work for DEATH threat against this naïve maestro.
Still, this Palestinian professional fiddler’s future is none of my business. Not only he is too old to join Barenboim’s future Divan-project, but also he should prove his relationship with The Edward Said National Conservatory of Music first, instead of building his professional career surrounded by too many international supporters, from French Local Music School to British or Canadian or German or Italian or even New York Whatsoever.
If you follow this Cultural Scandal and Others, it is easy to figure out how aggressive Foreign invasion has been in recent years… in the name of CULTURE.
Islam Culture is unique. It’s different from the western thing
. Do I know better than the Egyptian Readers in this place? I am too tired to search for all the articles during this Cultural Scandal, but as far as I remember, this is what they say. They saw those Palestinian Pigs and their International Supporters frequently appearing in the International Media.
Do I need to write more on this issue?
Culture, especially Music, can play the most effective role to heal the broken souls of mentally, emotionally and physically hurt children. And how many Palestinian kids are presently suffering from TRAUMA?
(…) Both Egyptians and I will be perceived foreigners and our work will be considered to be international intervention or cultural invasion in REAL Palestinian Territory as long as our only weapon is Classical Music from Western Countries. No matter what we do, no matter how much we express our willingness to help them, we have to be very careful, and the situation is already messed up.
But then, this is what’s been happening in the same Palestinian Territory. Why do you think I used to introduce Mrs. Tania Nasir, the wife of the former president of Birzeit University, to the Jewish Pigs and call her ‘PALESTINIAN MENTALITY’?

SO,
Daniel Barenboim sneaked into Ramallah through the back door, just as he did during his Wagner-Scandal. I still say. Barenboim owes nothing to those NOISY Knesset members. But he owes his apology to the Director of Israel Festival, who later joined Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra after the dismissal-or-resignation-or-whatever of Dorit Beinisch’s husband and saved this Cultural Institution from Beinisch’s corruption- riddled atmosphere. (Too tired to write all the details.)

Please check the date. It was on MAY 9 that I wrote this. What have Members of Bashkirova-Gang done during this period? NOW, everybody knows that TEN days later, La Scala’s Lissner failed in Salzburg on May 19, 2009 (… after failing in Berlin…).

I was supposed to finish all the writing before Friday, (JUL 17), and it seems that Barenboim wanted to do something before I finish this part. As usual, Daniel Barenboim took advantage of this computer work, and then, sneaked into Ramallah through the back door. And the moment Mrs. Mariam Said openly sided with Zapatero’s Cultural Institution and those Spanish Pigs heard this news, they resumed Waltraud-Meier-Project. Then, British media joined them. Is it coincidental?

(…) So it is time to recall the great nights and look forward to a few more. The season that starts tonight is stuffed with plums. The Viennese and Amsterdamers are coming back, but one concert stands out. The appearance of the West-Eastern Divan orchestra with Daniel Barenboim on August 22 promises to be unforgettable. These wonderful young musicians, Arabs and Israelis, whose names cannot be printed in concert programmes, are performing Fidelio, Beethoven’s operatic hymn to human liberty. What a night that will be.
I shall be there. And that night, as every night, I shall wander down the hill to Queen’s Gate for a pint in the Queen’s Head, take a fond look back at the hall, and give thanks for this most civilising of great British traditions. (…)

(…) Yet, as the activist said, the opposition to the Foundation’s activity is not a top priority. Mariam Said, the late theorist’s widow who has took her husband’s place in directing of the foundation , told Haaretz on Thursday that Edward had always insisted that “this project has nothing to do with politics, governments, any of the current solutions or entities. (…) Fatah leaders are hoping that the new station will help them restore the Palestinian public’s confidence in the corruption-riddled faction. Fatah has lost much of its credibility largely due to the fact that it has failed to reform itself following its defeat to Hamas in the January 2006 parliamentary election.

(…) Human rights organizations in the Gaza Strip on Sunday sent a letter of protest to Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh urging him to cancel the new measures. (…) The measures are seen by human rights activists in Gaza as an attempt to take control over the international organizations and maintain a tight grip over the local media. (…) Yusef al-Mansi, communications minister in the Hamas government, defended his ministry’s decision to collect the fees. He pointed out that most of the stations were established during the era of the Palestinian Authority, “when anarchy and lawlessness” prevailed in Gaza, and as such were not even operating in accordance with the law. (…) The new measures were needed to end the state of ANARCHY that had spread to the media and other fields in the Gaza Strip over the past 15 years, he said.

I just hate mentioning this female politician, Mrs. Mariam Said. I am suspecting if she still thinks like a New Yorker, still interprets the happenings like a New Yorker, and still behaves like a New Yorker whenever she visits Ramallah, the most westernized part of Palestinian State. It was not I but her WEDO members, who interviewed that they learned anything-Politics from Mrs. Said’s political project during the workshop and expressed their gratitude to their honorary president and vowed to travel all over the world as Barenboim’s DIVANS. After encouraging Barenboim’s dreadful naivety during the international tour of WEDO 2008, what did she do on MAR 19 with the Spanish government, then what did I have to do on MAR 19 with this computer?

Sorry about this, but I can’t help suspecting. How many professional musicians and workers in The Edward Said National Conservatory of Music have welcomed her active involvement in any kind of Educational Project? Anyone who is familiar with Mrs. Tania Nasir, the wife of the former president of Birzeit University, and her ‘PALESTINIAN MENTALITY’, and her The Edward Said National Conservatory of Music, just can’t accept this female amateur from New York and her American Arab mentality. The widow of Prof. Said will be welcomed at anytime, in any places… but as a special guest. I can’t accept anything beyond this role. And I promise, too. The Palestinian public will never blame Mrs. Said no matter what… while enjoying any kinds of corruption-riddled cultural or non-governmental activities, unless they are kicked out of special interest groups. Even The Edward Said National Conservatory of Music blamed Barenboim only.

Sorry about this, but I promise. If Prof. Edward Said is still alive, he will be the very first one to carefully read all my analysis and even insulting. That’s Prof. Said I know.

The conductor is at the forefront of the first opera to be staged in the Palestinian city.

The director of the Argentine-Israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim was received with great enthusiasm in Ramallah after participating as a guest at the first opera production Palestinian Territory.
After that in recent days have spoken of an alleged boycott by the musician of Palestinian intellectuals, the audience applauded fervently to Barenboim at the Palace of Culture in the city.

“Aquí me siento como en casa, no hubo ni una señal de enemistad”, dijo el director musical de la Opera Estatal de Berlín.
“Here I feel at home, there was not a sign of hostility,” said musical director of the Berlin State Opera.

Palestinian artists undertook the staging of the opera “The sultana of Cadiz, the Spanish Juan de Arriaga, with support from the foundation created by Barenboim and the late Edward Said Palestinian philologist. The book was written for a special booklet in Arabic.
“These projects show that dignified people can also carry out major artistic here,” said Barenboim. The leader criticized Israel’s policy toward the Palestinians and again demanded the suspension of Jewish settlements.
“The U.S. president Barack Obama had every right to call the Israelis to reflect on their own policy, as it did recently. Unfortunately, so far I have not seen any signs in regard to Israel,” he said.

Barenboim supports various musical projects in the Palestinian territories and operates the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra with musicians young Israelis and Palestinians.
The musician was criticized by Palestinian political groups after justifying the right of Israel to defend itself on the offensive in December and January in the Gaza Strip, in which 1400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed.
Barenboim, who also has a Spanish passport, has challenged the Israeli blockade on Palestinian territory, but has also emphasized that Israel has a right to protect its population from rocket attacks by Palestinian militants, but not violently.

Barenboim, an Argentine-born Israeli Jewish and Spanish and to take Palestinian citizenship as a way to support the search for peace between both peoples had already suffered attacks on Israel for their positions against the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and their willingness to acts pacifists. Now, has just suffered a boycott by trade unions and organizations opposed to the “normalization” of relations with Israel.

Among the organizations are boycotting the proposed union of artists, writers and professionals free Palestinians, La Casa de la Musica and other organizations that are bothered by statements that make Barenboim weeks ago, in response to a question from a reporter regarding his alleged unilateral identification with the Palestinian cause.

In its response, Barenboim included a sentence in which he said that Israel has a right not only to its existence, but also to defend themselves. The condemnation of Palestinian areas seemed to forget that the director knew how to express themselves publicly on many occasions against the excessive use of force that Israel does, and even broke the law to move without Israeli permission to lead a Palestinian territory to give lectures or concerts.
The sentence means the cancellation of concerts scheduled in charity and Palestinian territories. These organizations called for a boycott of another’s personality from the music world, the Canadian songwriter Leonard Cohen, who at age 75 was scheduled to act in Ramallah. In this case, opposition to Cohen is based on previously submitted plans in the Territories to act in Tel Aviv.
“Cohen is not welcome in Ramallah if you insist on acting in Tel Aviv,” the organization said in reference to the Canadian, who was accused of “complicity in serious violations of international law” by Israel.

Barenboim, conductor of the Berlin Opera Orchestra and a driver of a binational Israeli-Palestinian, not directed to the local orchestra of young musicians as Palestinians had planned on Friday.
The organizations called for a boycott of Barenboim and Cohen emphasized that this decision has nothing to do with the status of Jews of both. According to spokespersons for the campaign against the “normalization”, the orchestra Barenboim-Said is not acting against the Israeli occupation, but calls the Palestinian-Israeli understanding traveé of music, without remembering the occupation and racism against the Palestinian people.

Palestinian anger with Barenboim prompts him to cancel Ramallah visit Jul 18, 2009 (00:03) / By Haaretz, Amira Hass

Unlike the cancellation of Leonard Cohen’s concert in Ramallah, which got a lot of press, the cancellation of conductor and pianist Daniel Barenboim’s visit to the West Bank city has been kept almost secret.

Both cancellations were spurred by different Palestinian groups which warned against what they described as the normalization with the occupation and with Israel.

Barenboim, who has performed in Ramallah several times in violation of military orders banning Israelis from entering, was not going to give a concert this time. He was going to Ramallah to attend an opera in Arabic, written to the music of the Basque composer Juan Crisostomo de Arriaga who died at age 20 in 1826.

The performers, most of them children, are members of the Children & Youth Choir of the Barenboim-Said Foundation, the Choir of the Arab Evangelical School in Ramallah and the Youth Orchestra of the Barenboim-Said Foundation and Al Kamandjati.

Barenboim started the foundation along with his friend, the Palestinian theorist Edward Said, in 2003, not long before the latter’s death. The foundation, which saw the creation of the music schools in Ramallah and Nazareth among other projects, declares as its main objective the “integrat[ion] of music into the fabric of society, from which it distanced itself throughout the course of the 20th century as a result of a general trend of specialization.”

Last March, as soon as word got out that the school intended to perform the opera in Ramallah’s cultural Palace, opposing voices surfaced demanding the city refuse to rent out the space. The Barenboim-Said Foundation learned by mid-June that the city council had decided against leasing the hall, with a vote of 6 to 5.

With time, however, it became apparent that the various political forces influencing the municipal arena did not see eye to eye. The parents of the children, who spent months rehearsing, were also opposed to the city’s ruling.

Pressure was also exerted from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ office, which requested that the city reverse the decision. On July 4, 10 days before the scheduled premiere, the municipality agreed to allow the performance to take place in its hall.

Although the city had made it clear that Barenboim would be welcome to attend, he ultimately decided not to come, citing his busy schedule as the reason for his own cancellation. His associates in Ramallah were concerned that protests outside or inside the hall would dampen the children’s happy event.

The bulk of dissent across Ramallah was not just over the performance, but over the very existence of the Barenboim-Said Foundation.

A leading activist in the Palestinian movement for a cultural boycott of Israel told Haaretz that the foundation’s publications make it clear that it “does not take any position against the Israeli occupation or apartheid policies. They talk about promoting mutual understanding and coexistence through dialogue, music, etc. This is an attempt to give a normal image to a very abnormal, colonial situation.”

But a great share of the criticism, especially heard in the streets of Ramallah and in e-mail circulation, was directed at Barenboim himself. The criticism focused on three articles he has published over some years, particularly in his latest piece published by the British Guardian during the height of Operation Cast Lead. His critics accused him of referring to Israel’s offensive in Gaza as an act of “self defense.”

Opposition to Barenboim and his foundation is nothing new, but the status of the Israel boycott movement has strengthened since the offensive against Gaza. Yet, as the activist said, the opposition to the Foundation’s activity is not a top priority.

Mariam Said, the late theorist’s widow who has took her husband’s place in directing of the foundation , told Haaretz on Thursday that Edward had always insisted that “this project has nothing to do with politics, governments, any of the current solutions or entities. It is a purely individual endeavor to break barriers.”

Said said she is proud of the foundation’s contribution to the musical and cultural education of Palestinian children, and has enormous appreciation of Barenboim’s contribution to that process, as well. During the premiere of the opera, Said read a letter Barenboim had written to the audience and to the performers.

INFORMATION AFTER REPORT 2

Pro-PA Conductor Barenboim: Persona Non-Grata in Ramallah Jul 16, 2009 / By Arutz Sheva, Hillel Fendel

(IsraelNN.com) A wall-to-wall Palestinian Authority coalition announced its opposition and boycott of the Israeli orchestra conductor, despite his strong pro-Palestinian positions.
The acceptance of Palestinian Authority citizenship, strong support for the PA side in its dispute with Israel, continuing biting criticism of Israel, and Israeli nationalist opposition to him – all this is not enough to enable world-renowned musician Daniel Barenboim to perform in Ramallah without incident.

Barenboim appeared in Ramallah on Wednesday night in a Ramallah hall, conducting the Jewish-Arab orchestra – but a large coalition of PA elements loudly objected and called for a boycott of the event. Among those opposing Barenboim were the PA’s Union of Authors and Poets, the Union of Artists, and those involved in the official PA-wide campaign for a cultural boycott of Israel.

Barenboim, a Jew who once lived in Israel, received Palestinian Authority citizenship in January 2008 in a ceremony in Ramallah, explaining, “I believe that the fate of the Palestinian people is interwoven with that of the Jewish people… We are either blessed or cursed to live with each other, and I prefer the first option.”
The noted pianist and conductor caused outrage in Israel even prior to that, refusing to be interviewed by an Army Radio soldier in uniform and insisting on performing compositions of the notorious Nazi icon Richard Wagner despite widespread protests.
Barenboim has also accused the Israeli government of “moral abomination” in its current ongoing defensive war.

Despite the above, the PA groups declared that their opposition to him is based on his diplomatic stance and their opposition to normalization with Israel. The joint Israeli-Arab orchestra that he established together with the late Arab-American anti-Israeli Edward Said, the statement said, “does not truly seek to struggle against the occupation and various forms of oppression of the Palestinian nation.”
The groups said that the orchestra seeks to overcome the hostility via music and dialogue, “without even mentioning the occupation and racism against the Palestinian nation.”
The opposition to Barenboim also cites his support for Israel’s right to defend itself, as well as his close relationship with Israel’s first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion, who died in 1973.

Barenboim no es querido en Ramallah Jul 16, 2009 / By Agencia Judía de Noticias
Barenboim is not wanted in Ramallah

AJN .- The orchestra musician’s view is not welcome in Ramallah, as its Arabic-Israeli orchestra is not called to stop “all forms of occupation and discrimination.”
Nationality Palestinian Territory, siding with them in the conflict with Israel and strongly criticized the policy of the Hebrew state, not sufficient to receive the support and encouragement to the Palestinians, this is what suffers the conductor Argentine-Israeli Daniel Barenboim. His presentation to the Judeo-Arabic orchestra, raised storms and a boycott campaign in Ramallah.

The front against Barenboim had several partners, the union of writers and poets, artists and the union of the Palestinian campaign for a boycott of Israeli culture. They released an official note saying that the dissatisfaction is not because they are Israeli, but because of their refusal to normalize relations between both peoples.
The signatories argued that the Institute Barenboim-Said is an Arab-Israeli joint and do not call an end to “all forms of occupation and discrimination” on the contrary it does against the “hatred and terror between peoples through the music and dialogue, including the occupation and racism against Palestinians. ”
The director is also accused of “supporting the Zionist culture and being condescending to the policy of the first Israeli premier, David Ben Gurion.

Barenboim is a strong critic of the State of Israel for its actions in West Bank and Franja Gaza. In his words: “Israel lost its moral advantage when combating identity.”
It has an orchestra founded by Edward Said, who aims to gather each summer a group of young musicians trained in Israel and in Arab countries.

Hum… No wonder the Spanish Winds and Brasses in http://www.barenboim-said.org/ are so proud of their education system and have become busier and busier in recent days in the name of WALTRAUD MEIER. OR… Hum…
Hum…Those boys and girls in the strings should be put through the mill and then the entire members should suffer RE-audition. Hum… Until then, Barenboim’s interpretation doesn’t work for this German ensemble. How come someone can claim to be Barenboim’s assistant when he is happy with this orchestra?
(…) Not surprisingly, Daniel Barenboim is NOT the one who wants to miss this golden opportunity.
ALWAYS… This guy, aka MR. MEGALOMANIAC GENEROSITY, wanted to have the MIDAS TOUCH, and therefore, everything turned into TRASH whenever he touched something. WHAT A MINUS TOUCH
(…) SHIMON PERES versus DANIEL BARENBOIM.
JEWISH VALUES versus HUMAN VALUES. I CARE NOTHING. I only care… when MICHAEL BARENBOIM is going to join Barenboim-family? Only then, this something-VALUE, whether Jewish or Human, will start working through Barenboim’s DIVAN-project. Or I will have to crush this human trash, strangle all his future life. Do you think I can’t? I can. I want, whenever I think of my golden youth, which this sh*t took away. I will. I shall. This is the only way to make Daniel Barenboim’s BIG-mouth a real VOICE of ISRAEL/PALESTINE.
(…) But then, Sir Rattle’s Jewish Concertmaster even sounds inferior to… funny.
(…) TIME WILL TELL. Whether JEWISH VALUES or HUMAN VALUES, time will tell which politician told the truth or lie. I am still not sure of President Peres. But I am very sure of Daniel Barenboim.
Summer is just around the corner and Barenboim will have to appear in Spain, where ALL THOSE BERLIN PIGS sticking around MICHAEL BARENBOIM are ready to train their ARAB youngsters how to make the most useless music business. This guy will prove his BIG-mouth in the most perfect way and I will have to castrate this dirtiest human trash and this impotent guy will have to finish his La Scala contract as quietly/noisily as possible and find a permanent job in Spain as a third-rate conductor. We’ll see.

SHOULD I WRITE MORE ON THIS ISSUE?
I never want to, never plan to run a laundry shop in Spain. I can never allow anything until all those Members of Bashkirova-Gang introduce themselves as members of http://www.beinisch-zapatero.org/ while Barenboim’s REAL Jewish, Arab and Spanish youngsters should survive as qualified members of http://www.barenboim-said.org/

HOWEVER STILL…
Is this my real reason?

DEAR PROF. FAWZY EL-SHAMY,
JIWON: (…) Do you know the real reason why I was hooked by your Egyptian ensemble? There was NO star system in your ensemble. Though during the short moment, grouping mentality was what I heard from you. This is always what I wanted to hear from the professional orchestras. This is also what made you furiously reject Glander’s Berlin/Spanish Pigs and their Divan-project, I believe.
Have you enjoyed Barenboim’s VPO concerts? This is the best example of ‘BLENDING’… this is what I call ‘Art of Orchestra’. Please ask the members how they got involved in this headache story. Whatever their reason was, they have never played the game with me. They just wanted to play MUSIC. They just wanted to play better and better. That’s the difference between Rattle’s BPO and Barenboim’s VPO.
And then… Zubin Mehta takes over Barenboim’s VPO and destroys everything. When is he going to die?
Have you finished reading all my music writings? Don’t you agree with me when I say that I never want to keep this work once I finish this part? I had to do all of these… because I just wanted to show everybody what I’ve been doing since mid 90s… all behind the scenes… and everybody around Barenboim knew me. While everybody grew day and night… became more and more mature day and night… for more than a decade… I hardly studied something advanced, always wasting my life on those human trashes and their dirty music and hardly writing anything beyond basic stuffs.
I think this is perhaps the best among what I found and I still need more. What about you? Renata Scotto Interview

Palestinian support is declining (…) It is unclear if this drop is the result of Operation Cast Lead, or if it is related to the profound culture wars taking place in these two societies between radical Muslim forces and relative moderates or even liberals.

I kept writing, kept reporting that whenever ‘Palestinian support for Hamas waning’ (Jun 29, 2009), everybody, international humanitarian workers in particular, should be very careful NOT to hop up Palestinian public and their fantasy, which could easily turn into hallucination under Wikipedia-Category: Palestinian Corruption, and its Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), and its Dragon’s Germini (b. Of course, this is NOT called the British media, if they have a mental ability to stop here. Why do you think I kept calling them HUMAN TRASH? Leonard Cohen won’t be playing Ramallah after all, boycott group reports July 12, 2009 / By Mondoweiss
The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel reports:
We are now pleased to announce that we have received confirmation from the Palestinian Prisoners‘ Club Society that they will not be hosting Leonard Cohen in Ramallah. A strong consensus has emerged among all parties concerned that Cohen is not welcome in Ramallah as long as he insists on performing in Tel Aviv, even though it had been claimed that Cohen would dedicate his concert in Palestine to the cause of Palestinian prisoners. Ramallah will not receive Cohen as long as he is intent on whitewashing Israel‘s colonial apartheid regime by performing in Israel.
PACBI has always rejected any attempt to “balance” concerts or other artistic events in Israel–conscious acts of complicity in Israel‘s violation of international law and human rights–with token events in the occupied Palestinian territory. Such attempts at “parity” not only immorally equate the oppressor with the oppressed, taking a neutral position on the oppression (thereby siding with the oppressor, as Desmond Tutu famously said); they also are an insult to the Palestinian people, as they assume that we are naive enough to accept such token shows of “solidarity” that are solely intended to cover up grave acts of collusion in whitewashing Israel‘s crimes. Those sincerely interested in defending Palestinian rights and taking a moral and courageous stance against the Israeli occupation and apartheid should not play Israel, period.

West Bank cancels Leonard Cohen concert in protest against Israel Jul 14, 2009 / By Guardian, Rachel Shabi in Tel Aviv
Palestinian hosts call off Canadian singer’s gig amid claims it was a hollow attempt to ‘balance’ Tel Aviv performance

A Leonard Cohen concert planned in Ramallah on the West Bank in September has been cancelled after the artist became embroiled in a campaign to boycott Israel.

The 74-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter announced he would perform in Tel Aviv as part of his world tour. The Ramallah date was added later, allegedly in response to pro-Palestinian campaigners who had tried to dissuade Cohen from appearing in Israel.

Now his Palestinian hosts have cancelled the West Bank concert, amid claims that the planned gig was a hollow attempt to “balance” performances.

“Ramallah will not receive Cohen as long as he is intent on whitewashing Israel’s colonial apartheid regime by performing in Israel,” the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) said in a statement.

The campaign was launched in Ramallah in 2004 and calls for an international academic and cultural boycott of Israel.

Cohen, who is not believed to have a large fanbase in the West Bank, was scheduled to play at the 736-seat Ramallah Cultural Palace, a day after appearing at the 55,000 capacity Ramat Gan stadium, near Tel Aviv.

The Ramallah event was to be hosted by the Palestinian prisoners’ club and attended by families of some of the 11,000 Palestinians in Israeli jails of detention centres.

Israeli fans are concerned that the sale of tickets for Cohen’s performance in Ramat Gan has been postponed three times and the concert date does not appear on his official website.

Some campaigners have expressed criticism at the cancellation of the West Bank gig, describing it as a “missed opportunity” for the high-profile singer to bring awareness to the Palestinian cause.

But one poster to an internet discussion described the cancellation as good news for Palestine because Cohen’s music is “dreary and dreadful”.
Cohen, whose singing career spans four decades, performed in Israel during the 1973 Yom Kippur war, when he flew in to play for Israeli soldiers fighting in the Sinai desert.

In 2006, Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters, responding to pressure from campaigners, moved a performance from Tel Aviv to the Arab-Jewish peace village, Neve Shalom/Wahat al-Salam. A few weeks ago, documentary filmmakers, the Yes Men, pulled their latest release from the Jerusalem film festival, “in solidarity with the boycott”.

Leonard Cohen’s Ramallah gig called off Jul 14, 2009 / By Jerusalem Post, Rachelle Kliger, The Media Line, Special to JPost

Internationally-renowned artist Leonard Cohen will not be performing in Ramallah as planned.

The 74-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter has had his concert in Ramallah canceled in a development viewed as a small victory by groups calling to boycott Israel.

Pro-Palestinian activists said Cohen was not welcome in Ramallah as long as he insisted on performing in Tel Aviv, where a concert is planned for September 24.

The Palestinian Prisoners’ Club, which was organizing the event, decided to cancel the concert because it was becoming too politicized, but the club insisted it did not bow to pressure from boycott organizations.

“I wouldn’t call it pressure,” Qadura Fares, president of the Prisoners’ Club, told The Media Line. “We can organize the event – it’s not difficult or impossible – but we prefer not to have these hard discussions.”

“We need people like Leonard Cohen to share his support for the Palestinians and it means a lot, but the boycott [campaign] thinks that it’s like the experience in South Africa – that anyone that wants to support the Palestinian struggle for freedom should only visit Palestine and not Israel.”

Fares said he wanted to maintain the organization’s reputation as a nonpolitical entity.

“We’re a sensitive group and we work with all the Palestinians,” he said.

“We’re not a political organization and we to continue our help to the prisoners without interference of political issues. The administration in the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club decided to freeze this event. They will have discussions but for the time being it’s been frozen.”

It appears the concert would have been more a symbolic gesture than a gig to please the fans, especially as, according to Fares, Cohen does not have a large following in the Palestinian territories.

The concert would have been attended by families of Palestinian security prisoners, human-rights activists and handicapped people. It was agreed that the concert would be dedicated to the prisoners, Fares said.
Organizations calling to boycott Israel were satisfied with news of the cancellation.

The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) said, “Ramallah will not receive Cohen as long as he is intent on whitewashing Israel’s colonial apartheid regime by performing in Israel.”

The cancellation is seen in the wider context of cultural, academic and trade boycotts of Israel and Israeli products.

“PACBI has always rejected any attempt to “balance” concerts or other artistic events in Israel – conscious acts of complicity in Israel’s violation of international law and human rights – with token events in the occupied Palestinian territory,” the organization said.

Grassroots activists are trying to raise awareness about the plight of the Palestinians by calling for these boycotts.

Not everyone thinks the boycott is a good strategy to achieve these goals.

One Web site carrying the report had a commentator describing the cancellation as counterproductive.

“We shouldn’t turn anyone away who can lend their name and talent to the liberation of Palestine,” he or she wrote.

Another commentator, who wrote under the Hebrew name Shai, said Cohen should be reinvited and that “it would be an unusual opportunity to bring a message of solidarity to a Palestinian city and rebuke of Israeli policy regarding Palestinians.”

Cohen, who is Jewish and has described himself as religiously observant, has not hidden his affiliation with Israel. During the Yom Kippur War he toured IDF bases with a guitar and entertained the troops.

The Ramallah concert was supposed to take place on September 26, two days after his concert in Israel, in front of around 1,000 people.

Cohen’s much-anticipated Israel show is seemingly also facing problems.
Discount Bank, one of the sponsors of the concert, officially announced in June that the gig would take place. However, the concert date is not listed on Cohen’s official Web site and the ticket sales were delayed for the third time this week. There are rumors that the organizers are running into production problems and face difficulties in raising money to insure the concert.

There was no confirmation of Hebrew media reports Monday that the Rolling Stones would be performing in Israel this summer.
